Create a Custom Essential Oil Blend

Creating your own essential oil blends is a little like magic: you take a few plant essences, stir them together, and with luck, you create a brand-new synergy that's greater than the sum of its parts. If you're just getting started with blending essential oils, the Blend Creator tool can help you to understand how to blend top, middle, and base notes into a harmonious aromatherapy blend.

Fixatives

Fixatives are a special note in aromatherapy blends whose purpose is not to add a particular scent, but rather to make the other scents last longer. Fixatives are not needed in all essential oil blends, but if you are creating a blend that will be applied to the skin (i.e. a natural perfume or aromatherapy lotion) they are very useful in extending the life of the scent.

If you are using a fixative, choose one that harmonizes with your blend and comes from a similar fragrance family as the primary essential oils in the blend. Be aware that fixatives often have powerful aromas and should be used sparingly.
